Hackett Gulch Bronco & Side by Side 2-fer, Memorial Day Weekend, 2024
CO4x4RnR was called for a Bronco on Hackett Gulch with a broken CV joint. The subject had hiked out to cell service while his wife remained with the vehicle. They camped overnight until our team was able to deploy on Sunday morning.
As with any trail, there's more fun than expected. On ingress, one member ripped a sidewall and the team had to change the spare out. Further in, the team came across two broken side by sides; one with broken brakes, and another that was missing the keys, but were blocking the trail. The team winched the brake-less SxS up against a tree to clear the trail, and we came back for it on egress. The other SxS was able to be maneuvered off the path. Once the team reached the river, we left two vehicles at the end of the trail, and took the Gladiator and the Raptor across the river.
***Please note, CO4x4RnR utilizes Stay The Trail principles wherever possible, and does not condone water crossings as they damage the environment. However, this was necessary to complete the recovery, and we educated the subjects about Stay The Trail for their future knowledge. Please do not drive through waterways--you never know how deep it is, and it damages our wilderness. Ensure you check the MVUM for trail details, trail closures, and the turn around point/end marker.***
We connected the subject's camping trailer to the Gladiator, and a kinetic single line pull from the Bronco to the Raptor. The team proceeded back across the river, retrieved the remaining two team vehicles, and egressed. On the drive out, the team collected the broken SxS with a 2:1 kinetic rope. Once we reached the downhill sections of the trail, we connected the Jeep to the SxS as a brake vehicle for the dead tow via a single line kinetic rope, and shifted the front to a single line as well. Team made it back to the trail head without further issue.

CO4x4RNR is happy to announce the successful recovery of a stranded F150 which had been stuck on Hamlin Gulch for the past several months. January 2nd, a team from Colorado 4x4 Rescue and Recovery made attempt #1 at recovering a Subaru off Road 126-N Northwest of Nederland, CO. It was an all day effort of fighting insanely deep snow drifts. The team tried from each end of the trail and no matter what effort was given, the snow simply won. If you recall, we recently had a VERY HEAVY spring quality snow. Tons of moisture in it. Well...

Saturday July 2nd a team from Colorado 4x4 Rescue and Recovery spent the day outside of Nederland to recover a vehicle that ended up way too far up in the trees, de-beaded all 4 tires, and some how lost brakes in the process. Saturday the 9th of April a team went up the Switzerland Trail outside of Boulder, Colorado to dead tow a rolled Land Rover out of the forest. Was that hitch sent to the lab? Looks like rebar when it’s cut half way through then it snaps. I can assure you that in the 70’s transmissions were not melted and mixed with steel in rebar. All steel rebar will not snap when cut half way through, it will bend but not snap.

We stopped using chain and shackles on the farm for recoveries when a hook on the bucket sheared off. Soft shackles, straps or kinetic rope depending on the task. Chains are for lifting. On my truck and jeep I use a soft shackle adapter on my receiver. And always use a strap to connect to both tow hooks or points.

Thank you for making this video. I don’t do recovery of vehicles, but I tow a 42 foot fifth wheel RV with a 1 ton dual, and I didn’t know about any of these factors related to recovery. I have some straps, but haven’t gotten the soft shackles yet and now I have a much better idea of what is needed for my vehicles.

If you're gonna spend thousands of dollars on a truck and go off roading, it would smart to think about what would take to get you out of a mess and not rely on some passerby. I'm sure he meant well, but I've done some "towing" and I'm always thinking about what happens when wire/rope/chain fails. There's also a load limitation on the hitch receiver/bumper that may or may not be available.

I'm 70 years old and have recovered countless vehicles and pieces of equipment in my construction career. I deliberately keep people from standing in line with the chain/rope/cable in case IT breaks. I never once considered just how fragile that "sturdy looking" ball hitch actually is. I will NEVER do this again with a driver in the vehicle being recovered. And I will be aware that whatever I'm hooked to on said vehicle could come flying through my back window! I like learning one new thing every day and this is a life-saver.

I have seen alot of videos about helping others and so on (Matts offroad recovery for example) that pull out people. And one thing i noticed, when they use winches on the front of the "To recover" vehicle, they open the hood if someone sits inside. i wasnt sure why but after seeing this i really understand why. You can only imagine how much mechanical energy is saved in steel wires or other straps. (sorry if its hard to read, i dont have the best english)

Thank you for doing this video. I sincerely hope that it reaches at least a few folks in time to prevent more of these tragedies. I learned to do fire apparatus recoveries when I was still active in fire and rescue for my county. We had specific equipment to use for the purpose and all modern fire apparatus is equipped with towing and lift eyes on the frame ends front and rear. Like another poster already said that training could have left me thinking that I knew how to do other vehicle recoveries. Having seen your video reinforces what our instructors were at pains to say. "This training applies to fire apparatus only. It takes advantage of the unique features that are built into fire apparatus which comply with modern standards. Attempting to use these techniques to extract other vehicles will get you killed." That brings back to me again how much effort and care that our fire service instructors put into our going home in at least as good shape as when we reported for duty. Tom Horne

I learned this when I was working at Asplundh years ago. A supervisors truck (F250) got stuck in the mud and they used the tow ball on the bucket truck to pull him out. The same thing happened and the hitch went through the windshield and struck the supervisor in the head. They put out an announcement that we could not use the tow hitch to recover vehicles anymore.

That drop hitch has a lever arm force multiplier built in. You put 18,000 lbs force on the ball and the actual force at the point it broke is probably twice that much, maybe 3X. I'm a licensed professional engineer, but I never thought about how using the trailer ball as an anchor point would be dangerous. Thank you so much for explaining this. You likely saved several lives, good on you! It was kind and strong of the wife to allow this, she's obviously a good person. Prayers for her.

The biggest issue was the drop hitch causing huge shear forces against the hitch receiver. Pulled plenty of vehicles out w/ a 30k rated pintel hitch, dont have an issue w/ it as long as its not on a drop configuration.

The toe hitch that failed looks like it is aluminum. Normally, when steel fails it will break, not bend like what is shown in the photo. It also looks like aluminum; dead give away is zero corrosion or rust on the outside between the metal and the black coating. Check out steel vs. aluminum toe hitches. This hitch failed because aluminum is inferior to steel. Do we have skyscrapers made of cast aluminum? No we don't. Catastrophic failure was most likely due to the inferior metal.

When using a shackle you screw the screw all the way to the bottom then back it off just a 1/8 turn. That relieves stress on the shackle and then you get the true rating of the shackle. If you tighten all the way and screw it a little harder thinking it won’t fall out then you just added a weak point in the shackle because screw was tight.
